One of our most popular posts ever was this Big Fringe Garland from way back in the archives. A few months ago I was watching the movie Billy Elliot (best movie ever) and in the Christmas scene they had large twisty paper garlands. I was feeling inspired so we thought it would be fun to make a multicolor version. It’s pretty simple, you just need crepe paper, scissors, and a glue gun.
To get them to twist you just have to make sure they are long enough to pool at the ground a little. If they don’t touch the ground they won’t stay twisty. Make em in any color or pattern.
Materials needed: Italian crepe paper in different colors, scissors, hot glue gun, tape
Step 1: Take a roll of crepe paper and wrap both ends around a roll of wrapping paper. With another person’s help, have each person stand at an end and pull until most of the stretch from the paper has been removed. (Tip! You can use rolls of wrapping paper to stretch the crepe paper more evenly.)
Step 2: Fold the stretched crepe paper together. Cut the crepe paper roll in half.
Step 3: Begin cutting fringe halfway through the fold, leaving some space in the middle.
Step 4: Turn the fold over and cut the opposite side of fringe. Be sure to not cut all the way through.
Step 5: Unfold the fringed crepe paper. Measure and cut fringe into 18 inch pieces.
Step 6: Apply hot glue along the unfringed edge of one piece of fringe and another piece in a different color. Continue gluing pieces of fringe together until you have enough length to reach from floor to ceiling.
Step 7: Tape one side of the fringe to the ceiling and let the other side fall to the ground. Twist the bottom to create twists in the crepe paper. You’re good to go!
